A FINAL NOTE ON THE SELECTION OF THE CATEGORIES

The process of determining the categories for the World Beard and Moustache Championships has been a long and painstaking process. Our club has sought input from various people and clubs in an attempt to hear as many sides of this contentious issue and all input has been reviewed and appreciated. Our decisions on the choice of categories and definitions of each category were made in an attempt to correct a few of the issues noted in the last two championship events.

As Board Members of The South Central Alaska Beard and Moustache Club, we have decided to include a new category of partial beard - The Alaskan Whaler, and to make two other changes in the Partial Beard Category. The Sideburn/ Mutton Chop category has been clarified to state that no shaven gap be allowed below the ear, such that the hair on the cheeks is continuous with the sideburn hair. This is different from the reintroduced Imperial Partial Beard category in which there must be a natural or shaven gap below the ear. The definition of Natural Full Beard with Styled Moustache has been clarified to allow only true moustache hair (upper lip hair only) to be allowed in the styled moustache. The Garibaldi and the Verdi will now both allow the optional use of aids based on observations that many in the Verdi categories have been using styling aids on their beards as well as their moustaches. The rest of the categories were left basically the same as in Brighton 2007.

The concept of categories in general seems to be causing problems with some and may need to overhauled in the future. The South Central Alaska Beard and Moustache club will gladly be part of this revision, but we prefer not to make wholesale changes to the current format for the 2009 Championships. We have made our category decisions with the best intentions in mind and have tried to adhere to the basic traditions of the previous contests. The best way for these categories to be modified in the future will likely be a joint effort by all of the participating clubs. No matter what categories are eventually chosen for the World Championships, there will be those who are not satisfied with the outcome and there will be those beards or moustaches that do not fall neatly into a defined category. The most appropriate place for these outlying facial hair configurations is currently the Freestyle category in each of the major classifications. There are so many defined or culturally accepted styles of facial hair that some distinct categories are needed to separate them out and provide for an orderly and entertaining contest for all.

As in previous WBMC contests, we will have placement judges at the registration tables to ensure that contestants are placed in the appropriate categories following the guidelines for each. We reserve the right to change a contestant to a different category if it would be in his best interest and allow him to be in the most appropriate category. This process is designed to allow each contestant the highest chance of success as our judges will be instructed to follow the specific guidelines for each style.

We at the South Central Beard and Moustache Club hope that you will join us here in Anchorage for the fun and excitement next year!
