The World Beard and Moustache Championships are a truly international event bringing owners and lovers of beards together in a unique venue to appreciate the beauty of facial hair. The event was first held in 1990 and was held again in 1995. It has been held every two years since then. In 2003, for the first time, the Championships were on American soil in Carson City, Nevada. David Traver (SCAKBMC) and Phil Olsen (BTUSA) have spent many hours working to bring the World Beard and Moustache Championships to the United States again. America was awarded the 2009 World Championships during a vote at the 2005 contest held in Berlin, Germany. The site chosen was Anchorage, Alaska. The date decided on was May 23, 2009 and the event will be held in Anchorage's brand new Dena’ina Civic & Convention Center. One reason that this date was chosen was to hopefully allow more European competitors to make the journey to Alaska. The contest draws several hundred competitors from all over the world, each sporting a facial hair configuration that many say only a mother could love. Contestants are grouped by type of facial hair and each category has very specific guidelines. One of the toughest categories is usually the Natural Full Beard while the Freestyle categories are known for amazing displays of facial hair manipulation and are always a crowd and media favorite.
